It is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca
Deciding to take the fifth wheel journey is a big decision with a lot to consider, which is why we decided to give ourselves a year to figure everything out. The truth is, we are starting from scratch with no frame of reference and only whispers of a dream moving us along. So, needless to say, we knew there would be some stumbling blocks along the way. And it just so happens that the first one has reared its ugly head: braces.
It’s astounding to me how limited dental insurance is. Honestly, it’s surprising to me that dental coverage isn’t just included in overall health coverage. So many health issues start and end with proper oral care, so one would think that it would make good business sense to cover your mouth and not just your…rear. But alas, I digress…back to the braces.
After avoiding the dentist of the past year or so due to COVID, our entire family has been slowing (and for me, reluctantly) going back to the dentist. Some of the outcomes were good, some…not so good. The worst of it, however, was that dreaded word: braces. Immediately I saw the cash flowing from our pockets. I saw our fifth wheel roaming dreams drifting down the drain. Basically, I was already ready to give up before we actually began.
But, as any fifth wheeler will tell you, it is important to have some quality wheel chocks to keep you firmly in place. In our case, right now, those chocks are strong desires to explore the country and give our children memories that will last a lifetime. We want to see the country now while we all comfortably fit in a fifth wheel, while school can still be mobile, and while leaving home is more easily done.
Will braces be expensive? Yes. Do they have to be a deal-breaker? No. Or at least, hopefully not. All I know is that we want this. We want the fifth wheel roaming dream. We want to wander the country, taking in the sites and breathing in the fresh air. Most of all, we want to experience it all, as a family, while we still can. So, here’s to keeping the dream alive, at least for another day.
